One of the most exceptional treasures housed in Munich's Alte Pinakothek is equally one of the most important works of early 17th century European painting, the famous depiction of the night-time Flight into Egypt, painted in Rome in 1609 by the master painter Adam Elsheimer.
Never before was an artist able to depict the starry sky with a comparably breathtaking mastery. Not only can several constellations actually be discerned, for the first time ever in a painted work, a 'correct' depiction of the Milky Way, with its succession of countless, individual stars, can also be discovered.
