Published: Nov. 25, 2008 at 1:02 PM BETHESDA, Md., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists are looking for a way to clear the clutter in space, which some say is becoming troublesome on the heavenly highways. Launchspace Training, an organization that trains space professionals in Bethesda, Md., is asking for suggestions on cleaning up the litter, reported. So far, ideas have fallen into two buckets -- limiting new debris and eliminating existing debris. The space junk problem is increasi

CBS: Obama Vows To Cut Wasteful Spending

Tue, 2008-11-25 23:57
How come we always try to do something after the fact? I guess, we just don't think ahead and consider all the possibilities, that we may run across. It is impossible to prevent everything, but this should have been expected. Why this suddenly took on such huge proportions, is beyond my comprehension. Not that it goes very far, but all the turmoil around the lost tools, is turning into a nightmare: ABC NEWS: When Space Gear Turns Into Space Junk. It is not like it is something new. There has

Live In Orbit: Shuttle debris strike studied

Mon, 2008-11-24 04:13
One of shuttle Endeavour's cockpit windows took a hit from a micrometeorite or a piece of space junk, but it doesn't appear to be a major problem. Shuttle astronauts reported a ding in one of the multipane windows that was about twice the depth of a pencil eraser and about one-32nd of an inch wide. NASA engineers are studying the issue, but it doesn't appear to be anything to be worried about. The Endeavour astronauts are continuing with the transfer of supplies and equipment between the shu

NASA Astronaut Drops Tools Into Space Get a load of this! Today, a NASA astronaut fixing the outside of the International Space Station (ISS) has dropped a tool bag, which then floated away. Yowza! It seems that the American astronaut, [[Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper]] was attempting order Levaquin to lubricate a broken solar panel joint when the grease gun exploded in her hands. She then attempted to wipe the grease off of her hands when the backpack-sized tool bag slipped away from her and

Oopsy: Astronauts “Drop” Tool Kit During Spacewalk

Wed, 2008-11-19 15:52
In an unusual moment of klutziness, spacewalking astronaut Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper let a tool kit slip from her grasp while she was working outside the International Space Station yesterday, and watched helplessly as it drifted away into deep space. “Oh, great,” said a dismayed Stefanyshyn-Piper, a veteran of two spacewalks in 2006, as she watched the bag float away [Florida Today]. The mishap occurred during the first of four spacewalks scheduled to be completed during the visit from the En

Update: Spacewalks Still On Track

Wed, 2008-11-19 05:18
The loss in space today of a briefcase-sized tool bag shouldn't prevent Endeavour astronauts from completing their remaining three spacewalks, NASA officials said this evening. The so-called "crew lock" bag - which measured about 20 inches tall and a hand width wide, and weighed about 30 pounds on the ground - should have been tethered within a larger bag but was not, for reasons that aren't known. "All it takes is one small mistake for a tether just not to be hooked up quite correctly or

Raptors turn ball over more than astronauts drop stuff in space

Wed, 2008-11-19 04:39
Instead of talking about the horrible Raptor game and all the turnovers we watched tonight, we decided to focus on other people having trouble keeping possession of the rock. You may want to keep an eye out for weird shit falling from the sky because astronauts have a sick sense of humour. On Tuesday, astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper accidentally let go of her tool bag after a grease gun inside it exploded outside the International Space Station. The tote bag, containing two grease guns,
