How to Turn 40 Playlist

Mon, 2008-11-24 12:32
Oh, mirror in the sky what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life? Today’s Trivia Question:  How many times can a grown woman and mother of two listen to “Landslide” (Dixie Chicks rendition) on her 40th birthday without tiring? Answer:  Fourteen Fifteen and counting. Listening incessantly to a favorite song has been a psychopathic hallmark behavior of mine ever since Davy Jones sang “Daydream Beli

A direita portuguesa

Face The Sleeveface

Our friend Sarah from over at Workman Publishing (pictured at left, behind Judy Collins) came over today to provide some last-minute babysitting help while Peg and I started wrestling with some kindergarden applications (which handily eclipse the college applications I filled out twenty someodd years ago in terms of complexity and potential for eye-welling exasperation). Per usual, Sarah came with a batch of goodies from Workman. My gift was a brand-spanking new copy of Sleeveface: Be The Viny

Both Sides Now Of Judy Collins

Both Sides Now Of Judy Collins Wednesday, November 19, 2008 If you grew up listening to the gorgeous vocals of Judy Collins, musing about her role in CSN&Y's Suite Judy Blue Eyes, you'll remember her as the dark haired beauty at left. So when I saw her in concert twenty years later right here in Montclair, it was startling to see her full shock of flowing white hair. Equally shocking was the pristine and unchanged quality of her voice - I just closed my eyes and travelled back in time to an e

The Fallow Way. November 19, 2008

Reading the latest post on Nancy Bond’s lovely and evocative blog, Soliloquy (http://nancybond.wordpress.com/), called “Earth Sinks to Rest,” was too much for me today. You see, “Earth Sinks to Rest” is the title of a poem by someone named Clyde Watson, celebrating November’s passage to winter, and Nancy put the poem up on her blog so we could all appreciate it and i

Oh, no, Mr. Bill. It’s Random Wednesday

OK.  There were a few comments about  “Pirate Ships” yesterday, so I did some more research.  It is actually a song by Wendy Waldman.  I had only heard it as a lullaby and had sung it to my nieces when they were very very very small (I’m not that confident), so I was surprised that it was written in the ’70’s.  I found a version, but it was the only one, and I know it at a bit livelier tempo.  Not fast, but not so dirge like.  So, here’s today’s soundtrack. It’s still very pretty, don’t you thi

Hello world

Anyone who has studied programming should recognize the title phrase from their first program. Nothing geeky here, just a way to break the ice. It's been so long since my muse left me and hit the road, I probably wouldn't recognize her if she did come back.I've been meaning to post something before now, but just haven't really been up to it. The past few days have me feeling somewhat down; it was on the fifteenth of November three years ago that I lost my dad to cancer, and, though the pain

On the weekend a Radio 2 listener/blog reader wrote in about the Jeff Buckley cover of the Leonard Cohen song, Hallelujah. It's not a very long limb to go out on to say it's one of the best -- a wrenchingly beautiful version of a wrenchingly beautiful song. In fact recently the BBC aired a documentary about the song itself, called The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall, frustratingly not available online. But what is available, is the December 2008 cover story in Mojo magazine, called The Incr

What Do You Think Gordon Lightfoot Should Write About?

cd swap

Wed, 2008-11-12 00:59
For a few summers, friends and I did a cd swap. It's sort of like doing a mix tape, except each of us got assigned a month, and when it was your turn, you'd made cds for all the participants and mail them out. It was kind of like a cd-of-the-month club and I loved knowing I was going to get to hear new music on a regular basis. I had a great time making my mixes to send out, as well as (of course!) making the cover art. Here was one of my summer ones (playlist follows the picture): Here i

Only in America . . . could establishment Whites be so scared of Black people they have to call a bi-racial man the "First Black President." I'm not breaking any ground by noting that reality. It was the biggest topic in the e-mails last week. "Only Once (Ty, Betty, Cedric and Marcia)" resulted in many, many e-mails and the most basic question from Black and African-American readers was, "Why are we wasting our first on a bi-racial?" Exactly. Barack's got his own first to claim. He is b

Eric Andersen - Blue River (1972) DL Eric Andersen - Sweet Surprise (1976) DL A brief biography (grabbed from amazon): Eric Andersen has maintained a career as a folk-based singer/songwriter since the 1960s. In contrast to such peers as Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs, Andersen's writing has had a romantic/philosophical/poetic bent for the most part, rather than a socially conscious one, though one of his best-known songs, "Thirsty Boots," has as its backgro

New Release Tuesday: Lucinda Williams & Department of Eagles

Tue, 2008-10-14 22:47
Department of Eagles In Ear Park (4AD) It's hard to imagine that anyone who takes the time (in this case years) to complete a full-length record considers their work a "side project," and listening to In Ear Park makes us want to correct people who --though well intentioned-- aren't reading the press release as closely as they should. Department of Eagles was started by Daniel Rossen and his college friend Fred Nicolaus before the former joined Grizzly Bear, and this collection of songs is a
