Does Charlie Saatchi no longer "heart" Damien Hirst?

Fri, 2008-11-28 04:33
One of the big news items in the London dailies last week that proves the economy is really tanking, was the fact that Uber-Art-Fucktard, Damien Hirst was laying off some of his army of "apprentices" engaged in the production of his spin and butterfly paintings, not to mention his "verging on the edge of super-stupid" medicine cabinets... All of which are an invitation for people with more money than brains to blow their ill gotten gains on worthless pieces of trash... So, you ask, what has thi

Two Hangings.

Lately I've been thinking not of Noah, but an article of his in TCJ #291 on fine artists Ryan Christian and Neil Whitacre. Lazy executive summary: they cross-pollinate with comics-- go look. Two exhibits now at the Cincinnati Art Museum present two more artists ripe for cross-pollination. I'd love to see what kind of comics they'd do, or you'd do after seeing them.***First, Ryan McGinness fills a room with blacklights and canvasses. Big in Japan, McGinness is well known to Giant Robot readers a

Damien Hirst Collection for Levi’s

Wed, 2008-11-26 20:35
After a successful collaboration with Andy Warhol, Levi’s is following up with another collab, this time with the legendary Damien Hirst. Featuring screen prints of his original artwork and Hirst-ified Levi’s logos, it’s pretty stellar considering its his first foray into the fashion world. And finally, an original Damien Hirst the average folks can afford…for now. See the rest of the collection after the jump.

Healing Arts At Barts

Wed, 2008-11-26 12:30
If we were ill we'd definitely hope to see our doctor wielding a stethoscope rather than a sketchbook - but from Da Vinci's anatomical drawings to Damien Hirst's medicine cabinets, art has long been influenced by medicine. A new exhibition now aims to prove that art can positively affect the healing process. It's hoped that patients at Barts and The Royal London will benefit from visiting newly refurbished gallery spaces in the hospitals that are playing host to 'Material Worlds' until January.

Damien Hirst for Levi’s T-shirt

Wed, 2008-11-26 11:21
Levi’s decided on working with Damien Hirst a while back, seeing it as a natural evolution from their use of Andy Warhol’s work on some of their pieces. This shirt is one of the products of the resulting collaboration and it’s got the main ingredients that make a graphic print tee great – an eye catching print that’s big enough to be seen from a distance. Take note Supreme. Get it from Browns. © 2008 Selectism for Titel Media. Author: Jason Dike | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us

LONDON///NEWS///DAMIEN HIRST LAYS OFF STUDIO STAFF

Wed, 2008-11-26 03:32
Damien faces the global economic crisis with his game face—and skull—intact… After a record-breaking solo auction at SOTHEBY’S in September that raised a record $200 million USD, DAMIEN HIRST has announced this week that he’s laying off half of his staff of London-based assistants that create the bulk of his art in a factory-style setting under his Science Ltd. studio umbrella. Having explained in July that he would cease production of some of his most (in)famous series of works including th

David Hayward, “The Naked Pastor:” The IM Interview

Wed, 2008-11-26 01:23
I’ve long admired pastor, blogger and cartoonist David Hayward, aka The Naked Pastor. (That’s Naked. Not “Nekkid.” He’s not up to anything.) I’ve been excited about this interview and it’s proven to be everything I hoped for. David has a fascinating journey and a point of view the IM audience will appreciate. I’ve already gotten one email telling me I should have nothing to do with him, so he’s good people. David pastors a Vineyard in Canada, and he will give you the whole story. And those of

Robert De Niro, Ron Wood, Damien Hirst, and More Make the Best of Alcohol-Free Museum of Islamic Art Opening

Tue, 2008-11-25 23:30
The opening of I.M. Pei's Museum of Islamic Art, something of a Cubist Xanadu, in Doha, Qatar, certainly seemed to carry the newfound sense that the Bush-era "Clash of Civilizations" might be coming to an end. Guests at the lush (if alcohol-free) weekend-long opening event included Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, delegations from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Louvre, auction-house heads, and Robert De Niro, who was seated with the nation's royal family. James Snyder, direc

P.M. EDITION: From Damien Hirst to Bubble Burst?

Tue, 2008-11-25 23:24
P.M. EDITION: From Damien Hirst to Bubble Burst? Art | There’s at least one more market bubble that hasn’t yet burst, an article says — contemporary art. But you wait: “It has exhibited all the classic features of the South Sea bubble of 1720 or the tulip madness of the 1630s. It has been the bubble of bubbles - balancing precariously on top of other now-burst bubbles in credit, housing and commodities - and inflating more dramatically than all of them.” [Prospect]

With Rich Collectors Buying Less, Damien Hirst Lays Off Most of His Staff

Tue, 2008-11-25 11:01
Okay, here's one "the economy is bad" story we doubt anyone was expecting, particularly us. Thanks to ArtInfo, we were pointed to the news that Damien Hirst has decided to lay off almost all of his staff, surprising the lot of them, despite a representative saying this was all pre-planned. What seems bizarre about all of this, of course, is that Hirst has lately been on a selling streak, handing off work as if he were trading in bricks of gold for cash. So maybe it is just coincidental timing

Deja

BANKSY RELEASES “NOLA” PRINT

Mon, 2008-11-24 21:52
the ever-elusive phantom that is the underground art world’s “Damien Hirst,” namely BANKSY, has just released a silk-screened print of an image from his recent swing through New Orleans. Produced by UK print house PICTURES ON WALLS, the signed and numbered edition cashes out at a very hefty £450 GBP (approx. $670 USD), making us hope that in these economically dire times, the proceeds from this very politically-motivated image are being donated to a local New Orleans charity, although no inf

Levi’s X Damien Hirst: denim, tees e hoody diventano pezzi di “arte”

Mon, 2008-11-24 21:50

Hard Times Hit Hirst's Studio

Mon, 2008-11-24 18:10
Hard Times Hit Hirst’s Studio By Dave Itzkoff Damien Hirst, with his work “Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.” (Tom Fecht for The New York Times) He may have sold more than $200 million in art at a two-day auction in London this year, but not even Damien Hirst is immune to the effects of the ailing economy. The Guardian reported that several of the workers who make the pills for Mr. Hirst’s drug-cabinet artworks were told their contracts would not be renewed. A s

Claude Cahun no leilão da Christie's

Wed, 2008-10-15 19:00
