Art

Sunday 11/23/08 Santiago, Chile Between Valparaiso’s paint-soaked streets and Santiago’s outdoor sculpture parks and cavernous museums, I’ve spent the better part of the last two weeks wandering wide-eyed through fairytale art-scapes that have kept my mind spinning. Yesterday I saw Jan Fabre’s show that is currently up at the Modern Museum of Art in Santiago. Brains, dead cats hanging on hooks from the ceiling, bugs, men covered in pins and nails, and weird steel creatures with antennae–F

The Fight to Save Paris' Deyrolle, Paris' Own Naturalia Shop cum Natural History Museum

Sun, 2008-11-16 10:04
There is a wonderful story in the New York Times about the famous Deyrolle of Paris--likened to a natural history museum where one could buy nearly everything--and the aftermath of its recent destruction by fire.Deyrolle, founded in 1831 by well-known entomologist Jean-Baptiste Deyrolle, has for over a century been a Parisian institution for locals and tourists alike. Part taxidermy shop and part museum, Deyrolle displayed its epic taxidermy, fossils, butterfly collection, shadow boxes and bell

PREMIO PINO PASCALI 2008.

“If it stinks, you must be in Antwerp”

I’ve always cultivated a healthy “show me the merchandise” attitude towards people/bloggers who claim to be “artists”.  Sure, some artworks can almost bring tears to my eyes, while other wannabes are only a legend in their own minds. Quite often there’s nothing but a thin line between a true budding artist and the online (yawn) dabbling of self-acclaimed blog stars, surrounding themselves with a dedicated but basically clueless “oh, that is amaaaazin” hardcore base of comment groupies who will c

Jan Fabre’s Art Installation Talk of the Town

Wed, 2008-11-05 12:36
Antwerp, Belgium - “Spring is on its way” is the latest installation by Belgian conceptual artist Jan Fabre at Antwerp’s contemporary art museum Muhka. The piece of art with the meaningful name has become the talk of the town recently because of its distinct looks and because of its smell. Fabre’s installation scheduled to run until the start of spring 2009 consists of condoms filled with onions and potatoes hanging from the ceiling. Local media reported that many visitors and even museum gua

Crazy & Conceptual: Onions & Condoms

Tue, 2008-11-04 16:46
Call me old-fashioned, square or conservative, but I can't stand most conceptual art. What does it mean to me? It usually means that the artist is self-indulgent to the point of nausea, thinking their view is artistically valid. It also means -only to a bitch like me - that the artist opts for freakish 3D displays because they probably can't paint or draw a line. Take the installation Spring Is On It's Way by Belgian artist Jan Fabre, renowned for his odoriferous art. This latest installation

Belgian artist's work causes a stink — again (AP)

ANTWERP, Belgium – One man’s stink is another man’s major art project. A piece by Belgian conceptual artist Jan Fabre at the Antwerp’s MuHKA contemporary art museum is challenging the nose as well as the eyes. The installation “Spring is on its way” consists of onions and potatoes hung from the ceiling in condoms. And the vegetables are, well, spoiling. “Like many of his works, it is about transformation and metamorphosis,” MuHKA’s Kathleen Weyts said of Fabre, who had a solo show at the Par
