The A's To Our Q's: Edina Tokodi (aka Mosstika)

Wed, 2008-11-19 04:41
For the past year, Sara and I have been working day and night on a book project for TASCHEN entitled "Trespass: A History Of Unauthorized Public Art". In the course of doing research for the book. we've had the pleasure of meeting and learning about new forms "unauthorized public art" that we haven't showcased as mich as we should have on the Wooster site. One of our obsessions of late has been the "guerrilla gardening" movement. And one of the most influential artists in this scene is Edin

Isn’t the BBC fantastic? So many wonderful programmes on art and such amazing costume dramas too! I was lucky enough to catch a programme on Tuesday entitled ‘Imagine: Let there be light’ that focused on American artist James Turrell and his wonderful creations that stir the senses using light as his main medium. I also caught the second part in the BBC4 series ‘Picture Book‘ on Wednesday. This week’s episode spotlighted books for young readers and offered a feast of wonderful illustrations from

Alan Yentob presents an overview of the state of light art - mainly composed of pieces in London last year (UVA’s Volume at the Southbank centre, Anthony McCall at the Serpentine, Liliane Lijn at Riflemaker), but with interesting forays around the world to see other artists - notably James Turrell, and his amazing 30 year installation at Roden Crater. Yentob does his normal gormless wandering schtick, but he really does seem interested in the pieces, and does pass on the sense of wonder that pi

Let There Be Light

The BBC screened a fascinating programme in the Imagine.... series presented by Alan Yentob last night. Yentob explored the relationship between artists and light and met artists who use light as their inspiration or medium, including the American artist James Turrell, who I had not previously been familiar with. For the next 7 (now 6) days, this programme is available to view over the net here at BBC iplayer (I hope the link works). IMHO it is well worth a look as some of the light e

Jason calls and says he'll be a little late picking us up. He had to take care of a few last minute things before heading out of town. He arrives in a late '90's Prevost bus complete with what he describes as "cheesy" decor. He seems to be in a good mood. His accent places him somewhere between Texas and Saskatchewan. Turns out he's born and raised in Regina and spent a few years in Austin, Texas. He's wondering why there's only three of us and no one to help load our gear. John, Jacob, Nova an

Here’s a logical next step: Putting old, long out-of-print exhibition catalogues online, Google Books-style. LACMA, which has apparen

A Long Now Moment: James Turrell’s Roden Crater

Mon, 2008-11-03 07:44
Sometimes it’s important to view time in bigger chunks, to look at projects as something monumental. James Turrell’s earth work sculpture Roden Crater was started in 1979 and will be open to the public in 2011. This silent film gives a peek inside the project. The visuals are impressive. The Roden Crater strikes me as one of the new wonders of the world. Makes me smile that we mortals are still capable of this kind of thing.

Doug Wheeler, the third great pioneer of ’60s-’70s Light-and-Space art is not. That’s too bad. If Turrell was the set-designer of light-driven installations, then Wheeler was the guy who understood that ‘the set’ wasn’t limited to the stage or one wall, that it could take over an entire environment. Roden Crater Project- Volcano Renovation

Wed, 2008-10-15 13:16
Roden Crater is a natural cinder volcano situated on the southwestern edge of the Painted Desert in northern Arizona. Since 1972, with grants from Dia Art Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, James Turrell is turning this natural geographic formation into a monumental environmental artwork. He has designed a series of chambers and observation platforms in the crater, in line with the sun, moon, stars, and planets, inspired by ancient sites like Sto
