Seasonal Favorites V2 (Double Crown Records)

Thu, 2008-11-20 14:07
All this week, I've been writing reviews for CDs that were sent to me at the P.O. Box. This one was sent last Christmas and I'm just finding time to write it up now. This is a crime because the good folks at Double Crown Records were kind enough to send me a copy of " Seasonal Favorites V1 " which I reviewed in January, 2007. What hurts even more is that both volumes are of choice (and I mean CHOICE) surf and garage Christmas tunes. I'm a sucker for surf guitar. Add Christmas and I coul

Random Fandom November 15th, 2008 Well my trip to Denver went well. I got a chance to go see The Safes, who played at the Lions Lair . They blazed through a pretty quick set. Every song was sped up to ten. Those dudes were spent…I think they had two shows left to go before heading back to Chicago. Frankie looked like he lost about 20 pounds on the road. Regardless, they were great and gave it everything they had. They played a bunch of tracks from their new EP Sight of all Light, which is act

YMA SUMAC: The Queen of Exotica 1922-2008

Thu, 2008-11-13 20:40
Yma Sumac, the Diva Exotica, the Celine of strange, the Barbra of the bizarre, passed away recently, thus ending the original exotica era - she was the last surviving member of the Mount Rushmore of exotic music after Les Baxter, Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman had all moved on to that big tiki bar in the sky.Sumac was one of my favorite singers. I don't mean favorite exotic or ethnic or '50s singers, I mean favorite singers, period. She possessed an otherworldly, technically astounding multi-octa

It's also available on Itunes if you feel like putting this, or any other episode, on your Ipod. Listen to The Generation Exploitation Podcast #60. Election Day is behind us, and the promise of a new country is ahead. But if there is one vote I would still like to cast, it is a vote to keep winter at bay. And what better candidate for the job than the king of all tiki drinks, the Mai Tai? Like Chablis and Merlot, the Mai Tai has garnered a solidly negative approval rating over the years. Sa

RIP Yma Sumac, Voice of the Xtabay

Yma Sumac, self-styled “Nightingale of the Andes” whose reported five-octave range was the stuff of legend, passed away at an assisted living facility in Silver Lake, California on Saturday, November 1 at the age of 86. Sumac, whose real name was Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo, joined a troupe of traditional Peruvian musicians, singers, and dancers led by Moises Vivanco in 1941; Vivanco later married her and groomed Sumac for stardom. Signed to Capitol Records in 1950, Sumac emb

Don't Let a few bad apples stop you from accessing the Ungodly Power of Transdimensional Entities

Ask some dour passerby on the street, "Should I feel safe in accessing daemonic realms for personal power?" And they'll probably say no. But don't let that stop you. The Elder Gods are waiting for your call!My own usual weekend solstice debaucheries were put on hold in favor of taping a mess of AIP 60s Lovecraft-adaptations off TCM, many of which--in the bizarre irony twist of fate sort of way which the Elder Gods adore--depicted the exact sort of ceremonies I was shamefully avoiding. It's okay

Farewell to Yma Sumac

Farewell to Yma Sumac She died over the weekend in Los Angeles. A recluse. Fixated on the 1950s. There’s plenty of great Yma Sumac records to remember her by—Voice of the Xtbay and Legend of the Sun Virgin are her more famous—but to hear Yma Sumac’s 1971 hard rock album Miracles is to know the true melting pot of America: a Peruvian-born singer with a five octave range singing for a heavy metal band arranged by Les Baxter. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime albums; there’s nothing else like

Biker Movie Music!

Thu, 2008-10-30 12:00
Now, I hear you saying, "Vinnie, what the hell does biker movie music have to do with Halloween? And why are you re-sharing someone else's compilation?" Gotta say, biker movie music is the coolest! And two songs on this compilation, "We Have Already Died" and "Satan" (the theme for "Satan's Sadists," a soundtrack that I desperately want) are kinda Halloweenie. As for why I'm sharing someone else's compilation (this album originated at Lost-In-Tyme), I cleaned up most of the tracks, many of whi
